Every year, September 6th rolls around, and most people don’t think anything of it. But did you know that September 6th is actually a very significant day?
That’s right! The sixth of September is National Coffee Ice Cream Day… And what better way to celebrate than by eating none other than coffee ice cream?
You can do a bunch of different things with ice cream. From sundaes and ice cream cones, to scoops with toppings and whipped cream galore, there are so many options!
However, I think I have figured out one of the best coffee ice cream ideas out there, if I do say so myself. You might be wondering why I’m so hooked on the concept of coffee-flavored ice cream… And I don’t blame you!
Coffee ice cream isn’t exactly what people reach for at the grocery store. It’s certainly not as popular or common as vanilla bean and chocolate ice cream. But the thing is…
September 6th is National Coffee Ice Cream Day!
And there’s no better way to celebrate the unofficial holiday than by eating coffee-flavored ice cream in some form or another! Before we dive into my #1 coffee ice cream suggestion, let’s take a moment to discuss the origin of National Coffee Ice Cream Day!
The Origin of National Coffee Ice Cream Day
National Coffee Ice Cream Day dates all the way back to 1919. That’s the year that a little somethin’-somethin’ called egg coffee came to life.
The recipe made an appearance in a cookbook, with the recipe featuring a combination of coffee-flavored syrups and pieces of crushed-up ice. Later on, the innovative idea of incorporating ground coffee into the ice cream churning process.
3 Fun Ways to Celebrate National Coffee Ice Cream Day
There are so many ways that you can get into the National-Coffee-Ice-Cream-Day spirit! Don’t worry – I’ll let you in on my number one coffee ice cream must-try recipe!
As you can see here, I have three tricks up my sleeve for celebrating National Coffee Ice Cream Day…
- Iced Coffee Beverage
- Tiramisu with Espresso Ice Cream
- Lavender Coffee Ice Cream Soda
Instead of diving directly into my favorite idea, let’s go down the list and start with… Coffee gone cold!
Make an Iced Version of Your Favorite Coffee Beverage
This has to be the most creative option out of my three National Coffee Ice Cream Day ideas. Essentially, you’ll take your preferred espresso-based beverage and turn it into a milkshake of sorts.
For example, let’s say you adore peppermint mochas. The process is quite similar to the way you’d make your own hot or cold peppermint mocha, only you’ll be making a frozen version instead.
Start by preparing your drink like normal. Prepare an espresso shot or two, and as it pulls, take out your mocha sauce and peppermint syrup containers. Instead of pouring the peppermint syrup and chocolate sauce into your coffee cup, add the two flavors directly to a blender instead.
Then, once the espresso is ready, toss it into the blender as well. Measure out the appropriate amount of milk, depending on the size of your drink, and then pour that into the blender with everything else.
The milk, paired with the espresso, will be the main players in your frozen coffee ice cream drink. The flavored syrup and sauce simply add a hint of sweetness to an otherwise bitter, coffee-heavy concoction.
You’ll want to add ice cubes to your blender as well, but the number of ice cubes you decide on will be more of a personal preference than anything else. The more ice cubes you add, the thicker and more ice-cream-y the drink will be! Add a dollop of coffee-flavored whipped cream to take your coffee ice cream beverage to a whole other level.
Eat Tiramisu with a Scoop of Espresso Ice Cream
An Italian specialty, tiramisu can be thought of as the perfect mash-up between coffee and cake. Essentially, Italians were yet again quite genius when they decided to combine ladyfingers with the ever-lovely flavor of coffee.
By incorporating the fluffy nature of ladyfingers and the bold sensation of espresso, tiramisu was born, and it has forever remained a classic.
But why not take the experience of tiramisu up a notch in honor of National Coffee Ice Cream Day? Celebrate even more passionately by topping your piece of creamy coffee-based tiramisu with a cool scoop of espresso chip ice cream?
Trust me when I say…
It’s delizioso.
Cool Down with a Lavender Coffee Ice Cream Soda
Ahh, we’re finally here! We have arrived at my all-time favorite way to celebrate the wondrous concept of coffee ice cream. Without further ado, my #1 must-try recipe for coffee ice cream is a…
Lavender coffee float!
Think root beer floats, but better. Instead of a hint-of-honey soda pop flavor and French vanilla ice cream, lavender coffee floats pair lavender bubbly with coffee ice cream!
You’ll need to pick up a lavender-flavored soda pop. My favorite is from the DRY Botanical Bubbly company, but any brand will do.
Likewise, the brand of ice cream that you opt for is entirely your own prerogative. I tend to reach for Häagen-Dazs, but truly… Get whatever floats your boat!
Pun intended 🙂
The recipe is as simple as 1, 2, 3…
- Take two or three scoops of coffee ice cream and place them into a cup of your choice. I reach for mason jar glasses because that’s totally my style, but any type of glassware will do!
- Pop the lid of the lavender soda pop and pour it slowly into the glass that has your ice cream in it. The carbonation will make it look like your glass is filled to the brim, so wait for the bubbles to settle down and add a little bit more.
- Grab a bendy straw, as well as a spoon, and settle into the coziest part of your home as you sip on your easy peasy lavender coffee float!
